Environmental Program Officer

Background:
Established in 1990, The Thomas Phillips and Jane Moore Johnson Foundation (“Johnson Family Foundation” or “JFF”) is a progressive family foundation. JFF operates national grantmaking programs in the areas of Environmental Health (“EH”) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues and placebased grantmaking programs in Vermont; New York City and Suffolk County, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; and Telluride, CO. With assets of $92 million, JFF made 142 grants totaling $4.1 million in 2007.

JFF has distinguished itself as a leading EH funder since entering the field in 2005 and will have awarded $4 million to EH causes by the end of 2008. JFF’s EH program, which is overseen by a committee of Trustees and the Executive Director, was designed in partnership with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, which will continue to manage the program through the end of 2008.

The Program Officer will be JFF’s third full‐time employee and will report to the Executive Director. The position is based in New York City and will be available as of the Fourth Quarter of 2008.

Position Description:
• Manage JFF’s EH program (approx. $1 million annually) and other national and New York‐area environmental grants (approx. $200,000 annually)
• Prepare and present two to three grantmaking dockets annually, including written proposal reviews and grant recommendations
• Determine appropriate measures of impact for EH grantmaking
• Act as staff to the EH program committee and facilitate Trustee involvement in the grantmaking process
• Lead periodic reviews of JFF’s EH strategy to define and revise the approach to grantmaking
• Provide advice/assistance to support environmental grantmaking in Vermont (as requested)
• Staff other grants as assigned by the Executive Director
• Actively participate in, and support Trustee participation in, relevant affinity groups (e.g., Health & Environmental Funders Network, Environmental Grantmakers Association, Sustainability Funders Network, NYRAG, etc.)
• Organize Trustee education sessions on EH subjects

Ideal Qualifications:
• Graduate‐level training in environmental health or policy
• At least five years work experience in the fields of environmental health or policy
• Experience designing and implementing creative, responsive and results‐oriented programs
• Demonstrated ability to focus on strategic outcomes in program execution
• Familiarity or experience with the grantmaking process
• Interest in supporting place‐based Trustee grantmaking unrelated to the environment
• Outstanding communication skills; ability to write concisely and persuasively and to present ideas confidently
• Sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics and ability to work with a variety of personalities
• Interest in working with a family and comfort working at a small‐staffed organization

Compensation:
JFF is committed to offering a competitive salary commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The expected salary range for the position is $60,000 to $90,000.
